Don Bustos has more than twenty years' experience as a farmer and operates a certified organic family farm in Espanola. He was named the New Mexico Farmer of the Year in 2006, the New Mexico Organic Farmer of the Year in 2012, and was honored by New Mexico State University as the Leyendecker Agriculturist of Distinction. As co-director of the American Friends Service Committee-New Mexico, he trains beginning farmers and develops farmer networks throughout the state to support food hubs. He has helped create several farmer cooperatives including the Agri-Cultura Network, La Cosecha del Norte: A Growing Co-Op and Sol y Tierra Growers in New Mexico. He serves on the boards of several organizations including Western Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education, National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture, and the New Mexico Acequia Association.
